Grooming tips for your labradoodle pup
At fieldside pups, we try to provide our dogs with everything that they might need to be happy and comfortable as they grow up, including in-house grooming. Here are some tips from our very own groomer, Letti Van Otterloo. Keep these in mind in order to help your pup stay looking good and doing well during their groom!
The first thing you want to focus on is your puppy’s nails. It is important for your groomer to be able to cut your pup’s nails with ease. If you take a minute every day to rub, hold and pet your pups’ feet they will be more comfortable with their groomer touching their feet! Yes, it does sound weird! But it’s all about getting your puppy comfortable. Before you even pick up your dog from fieldside pups, our family will have been getting them used to having their feet rubbed and pet. This way, you can get a jump start on making your dogs calmer with their feet, especially since your groomer will have to hold their feet firm to cut their nails. Our groomer, Letti sees plenty of dogs that freak out when she tries to cut their nails, so get your pup ready for the groomer and work on getting them used to having their feet held and rubbed.
Next, it’s important to give your dog regular baths. Let your pup get used to the water first before getting them fully wet. Never get water in their ears and try to avoid spraying them right in the face. Also, get your pup used to the hair dryer by showing it to them, letting them smell it, and then use it on them to dry! At fieldside pups, our girls bring their dogs into the bathroom with them while they dry their hair. After a while, the pups are eager to get the dryer on their face, especially when it’s warm!
Another thing to try, in order to keep your dog comfortable, is getting them used to the feel of an electric shaver. One way to do this, while it may seem weird, is buying a cheap electric toothbrush, If you turn it on and rub it on your dog’s fur or even just hold it somewhere touching them, it can help. The sound and feel are similar to a groomer’s electric shaver. Believe us your groomer and your pup will thank you when they actually enjoy their groom!
Last, but most important, combing. Combing your pup out often is a must! If you want to keep your pup’s hair long, and not have them in pain with mats, mark your calendar weekly for a good comb-out. The more you comb the more it will benefit your pup. They will get used to being combed, they will not be as upset when their groomer combs them and it is a great time for bonding. You should comb every part of your dog including their armpits, under their chin, and under their ears. And don’t forget to comb under their armpits, under their chin and their ears! Letti recommends bringing your pup to your groomer for a bath and blow dry a few weeks after you get them home. After that, it is important to schedule an actual groom for your pup every 2-3 months. This will ensure that your dog is comfortable and looking good.
